Nourishing your family on a budget - a personal story

The Wholesome Mama

Nourishing your family on a budget.

Hey friend,

I'm guessing you're here because you want to nourish yourself and your family, which is why I began this business in the first place!

I want to encourage mothers to know how good it feels to know that your family is well-fed and looked after.

But sometimes that can seem intimidating, right?

What does it mean to nourish and feed my family well?

And how can I do it within my financial means or limited time?

Let me start with a story

For most of our married life, we have lived on one income- my husband's.

This was always going to be the way, while we have small children of course.

This meant that I had to get a little creative with how we were going to eat well on a budget.

Side note: one of my top tips in grocery shopping on a budget is to order your groceries online - this saves time and allows you to see how much everything costs before arriving at check out.

And as we prepare to have our fourth baby, I will no longer be working outside of my business, so I had to start really cutting down on things or swapping things out.

Recently, I was speaking with a friend who told me that she no longer buys her kids snack foods because they are just too expensive.

I thought to myself, why not try it ourselves? So I began to eliminate some of my kids' beloved snack foods like yoghurt rice cakes and potato chips. We bought a ton of Greek yoghurt, cheese, vegetables and so on to fill in the gaps.

And what do you know? Our grocery shop became cheaper!

I ended up buying a bit more meat than usual so that if my kids were hungry, I could cook some sausages or grill some chicken on hand.

And even though I might be 'depriving' my children of snack foods, I know that I am doing a huge favour for their gut health and our bank account - so it's a win-win!

What are some compromises you've had to make?

Maybe your story is a bit different to mine. But if your goal is to nourish your family - whether that looks like a nice cooked meal each evening or fruit over lollies as snacks, then I'm sure you have had to make some compromises along the way.

I can't think of anything more frustrating as a mum to get to 5pm and have nothing prepared for dinner and your kids are upset and nagging you because they're hungry and tired.

So I've got something to make life that little bit simpler for you!

TWM, September 2024 Do you struggle with low energy throughout the day? Hey mama friend, It's been beautiful spring weather recently and my energy peaks this time of year, as I am a huge fan of warmer days. Being pregnant means I struggle with my energy levels some days, so I am trying to be super intentional with 'listening' to my body.
